Marianne Williamson; 2024 Presidential Candidate

Marianne Williamson, born in 1950, is running for president in the upcoming elections. She is the youngest of three children of Samuel "Sam" Williamson, a World War II veteran and immigration lawyer, and Sophie Ann Kaplan, a homemaker and community volunteer. Her family practiced conservative Judaism. She became interested in public advocacy when she saw her rabbi speak against the Vietnam War.

Williamson has been active in the political scene since the 2014 elections, where she ran as an Independent for California's 33rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

However, I want to focus more on her 2024 candidacy! She officially announced her campaign for the 2024 United States presidential election on March 4, 2023. Williamson was the first major Democratic candidate to officially announce their candidacy, as Presid
ent Joe Biden did not announce his re-election bid until April 2023.

Williamson formally announced her candidacy in a twenty-minute speech she delivered at Union Station.  Facing steep competition in the primary against an incumbent, several journalists and commentators have deemed her campaign a "long shot." However, some Williamson supporters have criticized these journalists and commentators for focusing on their view of her as a long-shot candidate, rather than on the substance of her platform, thereby suppressing her ability to reach potential supporters.

Described as a progressive Democrat, Williamson's policies are similar to those of her former 2020 rival Bernie Sanders, whom she initially endorsed after exiting that race, and by whom she has been praised. According to ABC News, her priorities include free healthcare, free college, and free childcare. She is also a major advocate for the Department of Peace in order to promote peace and diplomacy, as well as the Department of Children and Youth in order to hold people, especially the government, accountable for the treatment of children and youth in America.

She is known for her support of abortion rights previously overturned, as well as her assistance in bettering the climate. She claimed support for the Green New Deal, and immediate re-entry into the Paris Climate Accords, and has stated that she would be willing to support the Trans-Pacific Partnership if it included greater protections for workers and the environment. Williamson has also assisted in a number of charity projects, including project angel food which raised over $1.5 million and delivered nearly 400 hot meals a day to homebound AIDS patients in Los Angeles.

Williamson is one of the 2024 candidates that has made great use of the social media platform TikTok. She knows that one of her greatest allies in this election is going to be the newer generation and their more liberal ideas.
